           A common noun begins with a capital letter only when it is part of a proper noun.

           St Peter’s School is a famous school.



          Collective Nouns


          A noun that is used for a collection of people or things is called a collective noun.

          A collective noun refers to a group.

          Read the following sentences.

            1.  The fox saw a bunch of grapes.

            2.  Our team won the match.

          In the above sentences, bunch and team are collective nouns.


          A collective noun can be singular or plural. However, it is generally used in a singular
          form. Collective nouns are often uncountable. But some collective nouns are

          countable and have their plural forms.


          Read the following list of collective nouns.


             1.  an army of soldiers                                2.  a convoy of trucks

             3.  an atlas of maps                                   4.  a fleet of ships


             5.  a bouquet of flowers                               6.  a flock of sheep


             7.  a bunch of grapes                                  8.  a gaggle of geese


             9.  a brood of chickens                                10.  a gang of theives

             11.  a grove of trees                                  12.  a herd of cows


             13.  a crew of sailors                                 14.  a litter of puppies/kittens
