Proper Nouns
The name of a particular person, animal, place, or thing is called a proper noun.
It always begins with a capital letter.
Read the following sentences.
1. Mr Joseph is our music teacher.
2. People wear new clothes on Diwali.
In the above sentences, Mr Joseph and Diwali are proper nouns.
The names of people, days of the week, months, historical buildings, religions and
festivals are all proper nouns.
Common Nouns
A name given in common to any person, place, animal, or thing of the same class is
called a common noun. It is written with a small letter. If a common noun is the first
word of the sentence, then its first letter is written in capital.
Read the following sentences.
1. The postman delivers the letters.
2. Birds are sitting in the tree.
In the above sentences, postman, letters, birds and tree are
common nouns.
