Now, read the sentence.

                   1 1                                                            Give me a pen



                                                                                   and a pencil.




















          Here, the word and joins two sentences. It is a conjunction.

          ‘Give me’ is repeated, so it goes away as you join the second sentence with and.


          Now, read the following groups of words with conjunctions.

            1.  poor but honest (joining two words)

            2.  on the boat or across the river (joining two phrases)

            3.  Father gave me money, and I used it to help the poor. (joining two sentences)


          And


          The conjunction and means in addition to. We use it to join words, similar statements
          or ideas.

          Roshan wrote an essay and a story.


          But


          We use but to join two opposite statements or ideas.

          She tried hard but failed.


          Or


          We use or to show a choice.

          I will buy a teddy bear or a doll.
