A preposition is a word which links a noun or a pronoun to some other word in a
sentence.
Read the following sentences.
1. The girl is going to school. 2. The birds are flying in the sky.
3. He jumped into the pond. 4. My sister is in class 6.
In the above sentences, the highlighted words are prepositions. They link nouns or
pronouns to the other words in the sentences.
There are different kinds of prepositions.

Prepositions of Place
They tell us about the location of a noun or a pronoun. The words in, on, under, in
front of, behind, between, among, near, above, below, over, beside are prepositions
of place.
