             Read the sentences given below and circle the adverbs.
               1.  The boy looked sadly at his broken toy.

               2.  The plane flew high in the sky.

               3.  He came to my birthday party yesterday.

               4.  It is raining heavily.







          The words that tell us more about verbs, adjectives, and other adverbs are called
          adverbs.


          Adverbs of Manner


          An adverb of manner tells how or in what manner an action takes place.

          Read the following sentences.

            1.  The sun shines brightly.                         2.  The mouse runs quickly.

          In the given sentences, the words brightly and quickly tell us how the actions take

          place. Hence, they are adverbs of manner.

          The words luckily, happily and faithfully are examples of adverbs of manner.

          Adverbs of manner are formed by adding -ly to the end of adjectives.

                  polite        –       politely                    sad           –        sadly

                  rude          –       rudely                      quick         –        quickly


          If an adjective ends in -y, change -y to -i before adding -ly.
                  lazy          –       lazily                      happy         –        happily

                  hungry        –       hungrily                    merry         –        merrily
