Transitive Verbs

Transitive means that transits or passes on. So it is clear that a verb which requires an

object after it to complete the sense is called a transitive verb.

            1. The boys played football.

            2. Mini cooked a sweet dish.

          In these sentences,

the action of playing passes on to the football.
          O
the action of cooking passes on to the dish.
          O
Remember that the noun/pronoun to which the action of a subject passes is called

          the object.

          Intransitive Verbs

A verb which does not require an object to complete its sense and has a complete

sense by itself is called an intransitive verb:

            1. Dogs bark.

            2. The sun shines.

            3. The girls dance.

Remember that a verb that does not pass on the doer’s action is called an intransitive

          verb.

          Linking Verbs

A linking verb is a verb which connects the subject with its subject complement.

A subject complement may be a noun or an adjective.

            1. I am a student.

            2. She is pretty.

            3. My mother is a teacher.

            4. He was the best student in the class.
