Task 3
Task 3
You will hear short extracts of five people expressing their views on social networking.
Speaker 1: Man is a social animal. From the beginning, man has lived in groups and does not
like to be alone. This is what gave rise to civilisations, societies, and institution of
marriage, etc. From time immemorial, people are known to like to socialise. With
changing time, our way of socialising has changed. The Internet has revolutionised
our lives, transforming us into a social person in a virtual world. Social networking
has changed many aspects of our lives and due to this, a special bonding is
happening between human beings.
Speaker 2: Social networking has definitely been a boon to the society. Till a few decades
ago, the only way we could keep in touch with others was by post and telegrams
or phone calls. But today, we have media like SMS, email, and various social
networking sites. Social networking has helped people to stay in touch with
family and old friends.
Speaker 3: I totally agree with you. We get an extraordinary platform to express our
feelings, and thoughts through social networking. These sites also bring us a
lot of information about our near and dear ones which we would have missed
otherwise. There is a misconception in people’s mind that using social networking
is wrong. It is not wrong, but the way it is used is important. Younger generation
must be guided about the do’s and don’ts of social networking.
Speaker 4: Though social networking is providing us with a great platform, it is also creating
a generation which lacks the real-life essence. Youngsters have started living in a
virtual world. They are glued to their small screen all the time fantasising about
life and forgetting the real world outside. They rarely ever meet those people
whom they socialise with on social networking sites. Gone are the days, when
evenings were time to play, meet friends, and socialise.
Speaker 5: Socialising means to mix socially with others and create personal rapport. Social
networking actually encourages people to do that is the opposite what society
wants in reality. It hampers the ability of an individual to deal with people off-
screen and makes it difficult for people to live and interact with each other on
one-on-one basis. People lose focus from reality and soon become slaves of their
on-screen world.
Task 4
Task 4
You will hear a talk on the importance of exercise in our lives.
We all know that exercise is important in our daily lives, but we may not know why or what
exercise will be helpful for us. As you are aware, we are evolved from our nomadic ancestors
who spent all their time moving around in search of food and shelter. They would travel long
distances on a daily basis. They were active and got their exercise from their travel walks.
