                                                          Exercise 4B


              1   Reema had 1235 stamps in her stamp collection, out of which 124 were damaged.
                  How many stamps are left  with her now?

              2   Rohit scored 5872 points in a game and Vikas scored
                  9884 points. Find the diff erence between their scores.

              3   The diff erence between two numbers is 2845. If the larger
                  number is 9876, fi nd the smaller one.

                                                   4   There are 2760 students in a school. If 1650 of them

                                                        are boys, how many are girls?



              5   During a week 5798 people visited a zoo, whereas in next week 4567 people visited.

              6   A train can cover a journey of 3500 km in three days and the bus can cover 2400 km.
                  How much more distance is covered by train?

              7   There were 4312 bags of cement in a godown. If 2310 bags were sold out, how
                  many bags are left  now in godown?



            Subtraction of 4-digit Numbers With Borrowing

            Subtraction  with  borrowing  for  4-digit  numbers  is  same  as  that  for  3-digit  numbers
            except for the fact that borrowing may start from thousands place if required. Let us

            learn through examples.

            Example 1:  Subtract 4968 from 7873.

            Solution:         Arrange the given numbers in columns and then follow these steps:

               Step 1:        Starting from ones column, 3 < 8                                     Th    H     T    O

                              we borrow 1 ten from tens column.                                                6    13

                              1 ten + 3 ones = 10 ones + 3 ones                                 –   7    8     7    3

                              13 ones – 8 ones = 5 ones                                             4    9     6    8

                              Write 5 under ones column.
