Example 2: Find the diff erence between 2541 and 6798. Th H T O
Solution: Here 6798 > 2541 6 7 9 8
Arranging the numbers in columns and then – 2 5 4 1
subtracting, we get: 4 2 5 7
Hence, the diff erence is 4257.
Properties of Subtraction
1. Any number – 0 = The number itself.
For example, 1693 – 0 = 1693, 2918 – 0 = 2918

2. When we subtract 1 from a number, the diff erence is the predecessor of the
given number.
For example, 1675 – 1 = 1674, 2235 – 1 = 2234
3. Any number subtracted from itself always gives zero.
For example, 1734 – 1734 = 0, 2149 – 2149 = 0
4. In subtraction, the order of numbers is very important. We always subtract
smaller number from the larger number.
Exercise 4A
1 Subtract the following.
(a) Th H T O (b) Th H T O (c) Th H T O
8 7 9 2 3 2 7 6 9 6 5 3
– 5 4 3 1 – 1 0 5 4 – 3 5 4 2
(d) Th H T O (e) Th H T O (f) Th H T O
5 6 4 8 2 7 5 3 6 4 7 0
– 4 1 3 5 – 1 3 0 2 – 3 4 0
2 Write in column form and then fi nd the diff erence.
(a) 3471 – 2350 (b) 4732 – 3121 (c) 5863 – 3241 (d) 9675 – 7365
