Example 2: Find the sum: 2143 + 1235 + 2410
Solution: Arranging the given numbers in columns and then adding we get:
Th H T O
2 1 4 3 Remember!emember!emember!
R
1 2 3 5
+ 2 4 1 0 The sum of two or more numbers is
always greater than the numbers being
5 7 8 8 added, except when one of the numbers
is zero.
Hence, the sum is 5788.

Properties of Addition
1. Any number + 0 = Number itself.
For example, 181 + 0 = 181; 7132 + 0 = 7132; 999 + 0 = 999
2. When one is added to a number, the sum is the successor of the given number.
For example, 4153 + 1 = 4154, 2356 + 1 = 2357
3. We can add two or more numbers in any order and the result remains same in
each case.
For example,
391 + 2000 = 2000 + 391 = 2391; 6123 + 1012 = 1012 + 6123 = 7135
4. The sum of two or more numbers is always greater than the numbers being
added, except when one of the numbers is zero.
For example, 2137 + 1022 = 3159;
3159 > 2137; 3159 > 1022
