Example 1: Add the amounts: 45 rupees 65 paise and 10 rupees 30 paise.

Solution: Write them in fi gures as: ` 45.65 and ` 10.30

` 45.65 = 4565 paise 4 5 6 5 paise
+ 1 0 3 0 paise
` 10.30 = 1030 paise
5 5 9 5 paise
= 4565 + 1030 = 5595 paise = ` 55.95

Shortcut Method
Write the amounts with the point in same column and carry out addition as we do
for other numbers.

Example 2: Add the amounts: 38 rupees 67 paise and 29 rupees 44 paise.

Solution: Arrange the given amounts in columns and add.

+ ` 2 9 . 4 4

` 6 8 . 1 1

Hence, the sum is ` 68.11.
