P. 33
Addition 31
Arrange the given numbers in columns and follow these steps:
Step 1: Add the ones. H T O
6 ones + 7 ones = 13 ones 1
13 ones = 10 ones + 3 ones = 1 ten + 3 ones + 5 5 6
2
7
9
Write 3 under ones column and carry over 1 ten to 3
the tens column.
Step 2: Add the tens. H T O
5 tens + 9 tens + 1 ten (carried over) = 15 tens 1 1
15 tens = 10 tens + 5 tens = 1 hundred + 5 tens + 5 5 6
7
9
2
Write 5 under tens column and carry over 1 hundred to 5 3
the hundreds column.
Step 3: Add the hundreds.
5 hundreds + 2 hundreds + 1 hundred (carried over) H T O
1
1
= 8 hundreds 5 5 6
Thus, 556 + 297 = 853 + 2 9 7
8 5 3
Exercise 3.2
1. Add the following.
(a) H T O (b) H T O (c) H T O
7 6 7 3 2 5 2 2 5
+ 2 2 3 + 4 6 6 + 3 7 9
2. Find the sum of the given numbers.
(a) 564 and 149 (b) 465 and 275 (c) 555 and 138
(d) 358 and 273 (e) 187 and 726 (f) 763 and 177
Addition of 4-digit Numbers
Addition of 4-digit numbers is similar to the addition of 3-digit numbers. To add 4-digit
numbers, we arrange the digits in columns of thousands, hundreds, tens and ones. Add
them columnwise starting from ones, then tens, then hundreds and finally thousands.
