Example 2: Given below is the histogram showing the weights of
36 students of a hostel.
Read the histogram carefully and answer the following:
(i) What is the class size?
(ii) How many students are there in the following class
intervals of weights?
(a) 80 – 90 (b) 40 – 70 (c) 50 – 90
(iii) How many students weigh 60 kg or more but less
than 70 kg?
Solution: Observing the above histogram, we can easily depict the
following:
(i) Clearly, the class size is 10.
(ii) (a) There are 4 students between 80 – 90 kg.
(b) There are 22 students between 40 – 70 kg. Fact-o-meter
[10 + 8 + 4 = 22]
When the first class
(c) There are 24 students between 50 – 90 kg. interval does not start
[8 + 4 + 8 + 4 = 24]
from zero, we give a
(iii) Class interval 60 – 70 means weights more than or equal break by using kink
to 60, but less than 70. Therefore, there are 4 students symbol ( )..
between 60 – 70 kg.
Exercise 12.2
1. A survey of 150 people revealed their favourite fruits as given below:
Fruits Apples Oranges Bananas Melons Pomegranates Grapes
People 35 30 12 25 40 8
Represent the above data by a bar graph.
2. The adjacent bar graph shows the usual modes of transport to school for the students in a class. Answer
the following questions by studying the bar graph:
(i) How many students are there
altogether in the class?
(ii) How many students preferred
travelling by train?
(iii) Which is the most and the least
used transport system used by
the students?
(iv) What per cent of students prefer
walking and going by the bus?
