REPRESENTATION OF FRACTIONS ON NUMBER LINE
Let’s learn how to represent fractions on a number line. To do so, perform the following steps:
(i) Draw a line and mark a point 0 (zero) on it, label it as O.
(ii) Mark equal intervals on the number line towards the right of 0.
(iii) Write 1, 2, 3, ............... on the marks as numerators and denominators equal to the given denominator.
(iv) Label the fraction with the desired numerator and denominator as ‘A’.

Example 1: Circle one-third of the given collection as shown in fig. aside.

Solution: One-third means . So, we have to divide the collection into three equal

parts and select 1 part. 3
There are 6 stars, 6 ÷ 3 = 2.
Thus, one-third of the collection will have 2 stars.
Example 2: Circle two-fifths of the given collection as shown in fig. aside.

Solution: Two-fifths means . So, we have to divide the collection into 5

equal parts and select 2 parts.
There are 5 flowers, therefore, two-fifths of the collection will
have 2 flowers.
