INTRODUCTION
You must have seen India’s national flag. Do you know to draw it?
Draw a rectangle of length 4 cm and width 3 cm. Divide it into three equal parts and complete the flag.
The top one-third of our flag is saffron. The middle part is white and lower part is green.
Draw an Ashoka Chakra in between. The white part 1 is called the fraction of
whole flag. 3
The part of a whole or a collection can be represented by a fractional number.
FRACTION Fact-o-meter
A fraction is a part of a whole where whole may be a single object or When an object is divided
group of objects. into equal parts, each part
Number of considered parts Numerator is called a fraction of that
Fraction = =
Number of totalparts Denominator object.
We can define fraction in three different ways.
(i) Fraction as a part of whole: Divide a rectangle into four equal parts by drawing two diagonals of the
rectangle. Then shaded parts represent different fractions.
One part shaded Two parts shaded Three parts shaded Four parts shaded or whole

(ii) Fraction as a part of a group: Suppose one pizza is equally distributed among 3 friends, then each one

will get of the pizza (Fig. (i)). Here, we divided a single thing among 3 friends but the whole may be
3
taken as a group of objects and fraction can be associated to that as shown in Fig. (ii) and (iii).
