1. How do we add a positive and a negative integer?
2. Which is smaller –1,000 or –1,001? How can you explain this using a number line?
3. What is the absolute value of an integer? Which is greater |–5 + 4| or (|–5| + |4|)?
4. Find two positive integers a and b such that their product is 1,00,000 and a and b do not contain 0 as a digit.

Objective: To verify the rule of addition of integers.
Previous Knowledge Required: The rule of addition that (+1) + (–1) = 0
Blue Red
Materials Required: Chart paper square cut-outs of two different colours (say red and blue).
Procedure: To verify the rules of addition of integers, we take some blue cut-outs which represent the positive
numbers and red ones which represent the positive numbers and red ones which represent the
negative numbers.
1. Let us add (+3) and (+2).
Take 3 blue cut-outs and 2 more blue cut-outs we get total of 5 blue cut-outs which represent (+5).
i.e.,
+ =
(+3) + (+2) = (+5)
2. Now, let us add (–2) and (–1). For this, take 2 red cut-outs and one red cut-out. We get 3 red
cutouts and it means the sum is (–3). i.e.,
+ =
(–2) + (–1) = (–3)
