Lakhs and Crores
In Indian system of numeration the largest 7-digit number 9999999 is read as
‘Ninety-nine lakh ninety-nine thousand nine hundred ninety-nine’.
When we add 1 more to it, we get:
9 9 9 9 9 9 9
+ 1
1 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 Thus, 9999999 + 1 = 10000000
Here, 10000000 is the smallest 8-digit number and in Indian system of numeration it is read as
‘one crore’. Thus, we now extend the place value chart to 8 places and in the same way,
5,00,00,000 is read as ‘Five crore’. 7,00,00,000 is read as ‘Seven crore’.
In this way, we get the largest 8-digit number 9,99,99,999.
