Addition and Subtraction of Fractions
In class IV, we have learned the addition and subtraction of the fractions. Here, we will learn
the basic operations on all types of fractions.
Addition and subtraction of like fractions
To add like fractions, we simply add or subtract the numerators and write the common
denominator.
Sum of like fractions = Sum of numerators
Common denominator
Sum of numerators
3 2 32+ 5
For example, + = =
7 7 7 7 Common denominator
Similarly, Difference of like fractions = Difference of numerators
Common denominator
Subtract the numerators
5 2 52− 3
For example, − = =
7 7 7 7 Common denominator
Addition and Subtraction of unlike fractions
To add or subtract the unlike fractions, we follow these steps:
Step 1: Find the LCM of denominators of unlike fractions.
Step 2: Convert unlike fractions into equivalent like fractions with their LCM as common
denominator.
Step 3: Add or subtract the like fractions so obtained.
Let’s learn through examples.
