Pattern, Net and Symmetry 189

        Net of a Cone
Take a conical birthday cap made up of hard
paper and cut it along the curved side. Spread
it on the flat surface and observe the shape.
It will look like as shown side. Cut from here Net of a cone with open base

This is a net of a cone with open base. Now think of a cone that is
closed from the bottom. Its net will comprise of a circle also.

Try to collect various solids from your surroundings and develop
                                        their nets.
Net of a cone with closed base

               Let’s Attempt

Example 1: Which of the following objects represent the net as shown below.

                        (a) a ball (b) a shoe box
                        (c) a coke can (d) an ice cube

Solution: As a coke can is cylindrical in shape and the given net is of a cylinder with one end
open. So the net is of a coke can.

                                                   Exercise 15.2

          1. Which of the following is a net of a cube.
              (a) (b) (c)

          2. Match each object provided in column A to its corresponding net provided in column B.
               A. (Objects)

              (a) (b) (c) (d)

               B. (Nets of objects)

              (a) (b) (c) (d)
