Division as Repeated Subtraction
I have 25 books. I can keep 5 books in one shelf. So, how many shelves do
I need in my almirah?
5 books are in the first shelf.
25 – 5 = 20; 20 books are left.
5 more books are in the second shelf.
20 – 5 = 15; 15 books are left.
5 more books are in the third shelf.
15 – 5 = 10; 10 books are left.
5 more books are in the fourth shelf.
10 – 5 = 5; 5 books are left.
5 more books are in the fifth shelf.
5 – 5 = 0; No books are left.
25 books have filled up 5 shelves of almirah.
We subtracted 5 from 25 repeatedly 5 times. This way of division is called
repeated subtraction.
The division fact is 25 ÷ 5 = 5
Use repeated subtraction to divide. One has been done for you.
