• 2016: AlphaGo, an AI-developed algorithm,
defeated Lee Sedol, the world’s number one
Go player. AlphaGo was upgraded a year later
into a generalised and more powerful algorithm
AlphaZero. AlphaZero learned how to play master-
level chess in just four hours and defeated Stockfish AlphaGo
(the top AI chess player) in a 100-game match without losing a single game.
• 2017: Sophia, the humanoid robot, is unveiled by Hanson
Robotics. It became the first robot to receive the citizenship
of a country, Saudi Arabia, in 2017. Sophia was named the
United Nations Development Programme’s first Innovation
Champion and is the first non-human to be given a United
Nations title.
Google launched Google Home, a series of smart devices Sophia
aimed at home automation.
Elon Musk launched Neuralink Corporation, a company
that aims to create an interface between humans and
machines to accelerate machine learning.

of activity which were considered dependent on human expertise. AI in healthcare
and medicine will enable the diagnosis of diseases and the development of vaccines.

robust. Detection of fraud and preventing cybercrimes will get a boost from AI-enabled
profiling techniques.
