Legendary Singers
In Indian music, melodies are categorised using an ancient system called Ragas. Some of these Ragas
have a divine quality to them which helps individuals while meditating. Indian classical musicians
and vocalists have been instrumental for promoting Indian music around the world.
Here are some classical singers of India. Read the descriptions and write the names of the classical
singers. You may use the Help Box.
1. _______________________ was a famous Hindustani musician who
was also actively involved in the freedom movement. He sang the
bhajan ‘Raghupati Raghava Raja Ram’ during the Dandi March.
2. _______________________ was regarded as the Tansen of the twentieth
century. He created his own unique style of singing. He was awarded
the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and the Padma Bhushan in 1962.
3. _______________________ was an Indian classical vocalist. He has
created his own style of jugalbandi, popularly known as ‘The Jasrangi’.
He was a recipient of the Padma Vibhushan in 2000.
4. _______________________ was a famous Carnatic vocalist,
composer, poet, and multi-instrumentalist. He has composed
many ragas. He was conferred the Padma Vibhushan in 1954.
5. ________________________ is a Hindustani classical
music vocalist and a composer. She has created her
own compositions which have been published in a
book called Raga Rachananjali.
