Paralympic Games
The Paralympic Games are a series of international multisports competitions in which athletes with
physical limitations compete with each other.
The first Paralympics were held in Rome, Italy in 1960.
The Paralympics are the second largest sporting events in the
world after the Olympics.
These games are governed by the International Paralympic
Committee (IPC).
Devendra Jhajharia is the first Indian Paralympic Javelin
thrower to win two gold medals, in Athens in 2004 and Rio de Trischa Zorn
Janeiro in 2016.
Trischa Zorn of the USA has won the most medals in the
Summer Paralympic Games. She won 55 medals (41 gold,
9 silver, and 5 bronze) between 1980 and 2004. She is a visually-
challenged swimmer.
Since the 1988 Summer Paralympic in Seoul, the games have
been held directly after the Summer Olympics in the same
host city and using the same facilities.

Between 1968 and 2020, India won 9 gold, 12 silver, and
10 bronze medals in the Paralympics.
At the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, Indian rifle shooter Avani
Lekhara won a gold in 10 m air rifle standing and a bronze in
50 m rifle.
France will be hosting its first-ever Summer Paralympic Games
in 2024. The programme will include 22 sports, 549 events, and
will take place from 28 August to 8 September.
