Public Speaking
The act of speaking or delivering a speech or lecture to a group of people in an organised manner
with the aim of informing, influencing, or entertaining the listening audience is known as public
speaking. Some people are very good speakers. Those who are not can acquire this skill with practice.
Here are a few tips to become an effective speaker.
Plan and prepare your speech by researching as much as you can about the topic. Make a
list of all the facts and ideas regarding the topic and pay attention to the grammar.
Speak slowly and clearly. Ensure that you are audible to everyone.
‘Practice makes perfect’. Rehearse the speech multiple
times in front of a mirror to see how you will look on
stage. Pay attention to the speed, pitch, and tone of
delivery.
Avoid reading from a prepared speech. If you are
nervous about forgetting something, make note cards
with just the points written on them. While speaking
you could refer to the note cards occasionally.
Use a little humour in your speech. Through humour you will be able to convey your
points well, and the audience will also enjoy your talk. However, the humour should not
be offensive or excessive.
While making a speech, try to sound as convincing as possible. This is very important in
the case of debates. Put aside your personal opinions and present your views as rationally
as you can.
Project positive body language to make a good
impression on the listeners. Stand firmly and
confidently. Do not fidget with your papers or your
fingers. Look at the audience and maintain eye
contact with different people through out the speech.
