DISCIPLINE
DISCIPLINE
(1) Discipline for development, democracy, and decency in public life does not require any
special classes, nor does it necessitate the endorsement of any expert to promote its
cause for social solidarity and personal loyalty. In public life, discipline should be the
norm. It is a dire requirement of the hour. Discipline refers to mental and character
training aimed at developing compliance and self-control in the face of temptation
or provocation.
(2) Discipline promotes peace and harmony, which in turn provides the necessary
momentum for progress and prosperity. No country, no matter how large or tiny,
can afford to play havoc with the rules enforcing discipline in society. If the political
and societal powers fail to recognise and follow the mandates of discipline in all
situations, any discussion about equality or social justices can be considered vain as
the foundation of justice, which is discipline, has been ignored. Plans, strategies, and
programmes will bear fruit only if they are implemented with discipline.
(3) Most objectives go wrong when people in public life or private enterprise lessen the
demands of discipline, leading to failure and frustration on multiple levels. Discipline
is the most immediate and essential pre-requisite for countries like India, which are
on the verge of economic breakthrough and a plethora of opportunities. If we want
to do business in the fields and factories, we need to have discipline for both the
rulers and the ruled.
(4) The recent plague and the non-seriousness towards preventive measures were
obviously a result of indiscipline, but some of us still think it was just an act of God.
But this epidemic should be recognised as the result of unforgivable civic irresponsibility
of humans towards Nature. The heinous manner in which ordinary calls of duty and
discipline by paid public officials were abandoned is a source of shame for all. Garbage
heaps left to decay in towns, cities, and metros, and their cleanup left to rag-pickers,
