                           ACCIDENTS
                           ACCIDENTS IN METROPOLITAN CITIESIN METROPOLITAN CITIES
            (1)  The  road  use  patterns  in  most  Indian  metropolises  are  considerably  different  from
                 those in developed countries. Non-motorised vehicles share the roadways with motor
                 vehicles in great numbers in Indian cities. According to the 2001 census, India’s rapid
                 urbanisation  following  independence  has  resulted  in  the  faster  development  of  23
                 major cities.

            (2)  The alarming rise in road accidents has become a serious worry in the country, with
