                                          THE STORY OF SPICES ORY OF SPICES
                (1)  Spices  conjure  up  thoughts  of  delectable  cuisine,  intriguing  travels,  and  a  fight  for
                     independence. Expressions like ‘variety is the spice of life’ and ‘sugar and spice and
                     all that is nice’ show how literary authors loved the effect and charm of spices.

                (2)  Spices  are  the  heart  and  soul  of  Asian  cuisine.  They  conjure  up  images  of  exotic
                     tropical  islands,  thrilling  voyages,  and  the  rise  and  fall  of  empires  in  the  Western
                     world. In 1492, Columbus set out from Europe in search of a maritime path to the
                     land of spices, but instead discovered the New World.

                (3)  Vasco  da  Gama  sailed  around  Africa  eight  years  later  and  landed  at  Kozhikode  on
                     India’s south west coast. Arabs began dealing with the Orient via land routes much
                     before  then.  Marco  Polo  began  travelling  in  the  13th  century  and  discovered  the
                     allure of spices. Spices play an important role in European conquests and commercial
                     agreements in India and the East Indies.

                (4)  The results of the survey are recorded in the pie chart below. In the months of April to June
                     2017, India shipped 62 different kinds of spices to its destination countries. Cumin, red chilli,
