A FEW TOOLS & TECHNIQUES
Like Nidhi, resisting peer pressure is not easy for most of us as we fear rejection. We fear being
mocked by others and missing out in life. Some of the following strategies can be used to deal
with peer pressure:
1. Listen to your heart: Avoid choosing behaviours or actions that peers may want you to do if
these actions do not feel right to you otherwise.
2. Be assertive and work on your self-esteem: Learn to say no and identify different ways of
responding to such situations. Also, avoid determining your worth on the basis of others’ opinions.
Develop your own sense of right and wrong.
3. Hang out with like-minded friends: Remember, there will always be some people who will
agree and some who will always disagree with you and you cannot keep everyone happy.
4. Seek help: Sometimes, talking your heart out with your parents, teachers, school counsellor or
someone whom you trust really helps.
5. Make an excuse: At times the most effective way to get out of a difficult situation is by making
an excuse and escaping.
