The first chatbot ever was developed by MIT professor Joseph Weizenbaum in the

1960s. It was called ELIZA. It worked by capturing keywords that users entered into a
computer and pairing them with a list of possible scripted responses. It was so successful
that most users thought they were talking to a real person and even confided their

personal thoughts to it.


