System Software

System software controls the overall functioning of a computer and manages all its
components. It is a set of programs designed to coordinate all hardware devices.
System software is further divided into the following categories:

• Operating system: Operating system controls the overall operations of the

computer. It is the first software installed on the computer. Windows 10,
Mac OS, UNIX, and Linux are examples of operating systems.

• Utility software: System software which helps keep the computer system in
good working condition and increases its efficiency is called Utility software.

Antivirus software, defragmentation software, and compression software are
examples of Utility software.

Application Software

Application software is designed to perform specific tasks and functions. For example,

Word 2019 is a word processing software used to create documents such as letters,
reports, etc.

Other examples of application software are Paint, Scratch, PowerPoint, and Calculator.
