Operating System
Operating System (OS) is the basic software installed on a
computer. It controls the functioning of a computer from the User
time it is turned ON until it is shut down. A computer is useless
without an operating system. It manages all the hardware devices Operating System
connected to the computer. It also manages other software
installed on a computer. It serves as an interface between the Hardware/Computer
user and the computer.
The main functions of an operating system are:
1. It controls the working of all hardware devices connected to the computer.
2. It allows other software to be installed and executed on the computer.
3. It manages various resources of the
computer system, such as memory,
microprocessor, and storage.

in the form of files and folders.
5. It manages access to the computer and provides security measures to safeguard
your data.
Windows 10, Mac OS Ventura, and Linux are examples of operating systems.
Utility Software
Utility Software is a system software that enables a computer to work efficiently and
perform its tasks better. They are not necessary for a computer to work but help keep
the computer system in perfect condition.
Some examples of utility software are:
Antivirus Software
A Virus is a computer program that can disrupt the smooth functioning of a computer.
It can harm the data or various programs in a computer.
Antivirus software is a utility software that protects the computer against harmful
virus attacks. It scans the hard disk
and external media attached to the
computer for viruses and removes
them. Norton antivirus McAfee antivirus Avira antivirus
Norton Security, McAfee Total Protection, and Avira are examples of antivirus software.
Disk Defragmenter Software
An operating system splits a file into parts and saves them at different locations on a
disk. This decreases the speed at which data can be read from such files.
