A computer system consists of many parts working together. The physical parts of a
computer, which you can see and touch, are collectively called Hardware. It consists of
all input, output, and storage devices.

The hardware of a computer cannot function on its own. It requires a set of instructions
to perform a specific task. The set of instructions that tell a hardware device to perform

a specific task is called Software. It cannot be seen or touched.

All hardware devices, except the CPU and power supply unit, that are connected to a
computer internally or externally are called Peripheral devices.

TYPES OF COMPUTER SOFTWARE

Computer software can be broadly classified into two categories:

• System Software
• Application Software

These categories are divided into further categories as shown in the image below.
