• ICT contains both Information Technology (IT) as well as Communications Technology.
• ICT has become an important part of everyday life for many people.
• All the electronic and mechanical components of the computer system that can be seen and touched like input/output devices,
processing and storage devices are called hardware, e.g., keyboard, monitor, CPU, hard disk, etc.
• Computer stores data in devices called memory devices or storage devices. There are two types of memory devices–Primary
memory devices and Secondary memory devices.
• Primary memory is of two types – RAM and ROM.
• RAM stores data and instructions temporarily.
• ROM stores the start-up instructions for the computer.
• Secondary memory is needed in the computer to store information for a long period of time.
• Examples of secondary storage devices are CD, DVD, Blu-ray, pen drive, memory card, hard disk, SSD, etc.
• Set of instructions or programs which governs the working of computer system and instruct the computer to perform the
desired operation on data, are called software.
• System software controls the entire computer system including the hardware and runs the application software.
• Windows is the most commonly used operating system.
• Utility software is designed to perform basic maintenance tasks on a computer.
• Application software helps us carry out a specific task.
• The term peripheral devices refer to all hardware components that are attached to a computer and are controlled by the
computer.
• Components are mainly used to perform data processing or power management functions are called internal peripheral devices.
• Components which are visible from outside and help the user to work on computer system are called external peripheral
components.
• When the computer is switched on, the operating system is loaded first in the computer’s main memory. This process is known
as booting.
• Operating system is an integral part of computer system as it controls the working of entire computer system and acts as an
interface between the user and computer.
• Mobile devices also have operating system that helps them perform their functions. Some of the mobile operating systems are
Apple iOS and Google Android.
• Windows Desktop is the main screen that appears after the booting process is completed.
• The background picture of the Desktop is called the desktop background or wallpaper.
• Small pictures that represent a program or a folder are called icons.
• Taskbar is a long horizontal bar which appears at the bottom of Desktop screen.
• Ubuntu Desktop is the first screen which appears when Ubuntu operating system is loaded in memory.
• The small pictures of the various programs, files, folders or shortcuts can be seen on the desktop are called icons.
• Ubuntu desktop has a Launcher at the left side which helps to launch commonly used applications with a single click and to
manage the opened windows.
