Let’s Learn Structure of Sentences
A sentence is the basic unit of a language that expresses a complete thought.
The way in which the words are put together in a sentence is called the sentence structure.
The basic structure of a sentence is: Subject + Verb + Object (or Complement). There are two
parts of a sentence.
Subject Predicate
O O
A complete sentence has at least a subject and a main verb to state (declare) a complete
thought. For example:
Anil walks.
O
Here, in this sentence, the verb walks conveys a complete meaning. It conveys the action
that the subject is doing in the sentence.
In English, the first word of a written sentence begins with a capital letter. At the end of the
sentence, there is a full stop or a questions mark or an exclamation mark.
Subject
The subject of a sentence is the person, place or thing that a sentence is about. It is always a
noun or a pronoun. For example:
Father is calling me.
O
In a long sentence, identify the verb and ask who or what before it. For example:
Last night, the rain came pouring down the hill slopes.
O
In the above sentence, came is the verb and the rain is the subject.
