The man felt sorry for the jackal and gave him a goat, instead of the egg. The jackal took the
goat and ran away with it.
He ran and ran till he came to the next village. There he knocked at the first door and asked
the woman who opened the door, “May I stay the night with you, please?
The kind woman allowed him to come in. The jackal asked her to keep his goat safely while
he slept. But in the middle of the night, he got up and ate the goat. In the morning he raised
a hue and cried, saying, “Where is my precious goat? Your son must have eaten it. Now,
you will have to give me your son in return.”
The woman offered him a cow instead, but the jackal insisted on taking the son. So the
woman said, “Wait outside please till I put him in a sack.”
After some time, the woman came out with a heavy sack which she gave the jackal. The
jackal happily went away with his prize.
He had not gone far when the sack felt very heavy. He put it down and thought, “This must
be a real big boy to be so heavy. I will sit here and have a nice big meal.”
No sooner did he open the rope, that tied the mouth of the sack, than the two large dogs
sprang out and tore the jackal to pieces.
