The words is, are and am are the present forms of the verb be. These are
used in the following patterns.
with a noun:
My uncle is a doctor.

My sons are in London.

with an adjective:
The boy is sad.

The students are happy.
l
with the -ing form of a verb to show continuous action:
He is going upstairs.

They are going downstairs.

We use am with I.
I am hungry.

Am, is, are, was, were, has, have and had are called helping verbs. They are
used with the main verbs. They indicate time in a sentence.
