In earlier classes, we read that a sentence is a group of words which expresses a statement, a
question, or an order. A sentence has a subject and a verb.
There are five types of sentences in English: assertive sentence, interrogative sentence, imperative
sentence, exclamatory sentence, and optative sentence.
Assertive Sentence
An assertive sentences states facts, actions and happenings, and can be affirmative or negative.
An assertive sentence always ends with a full stop (.).
(i) The lion is a strong animal. (Affirmative fact)
(ii) The squirrel is not a big animal. (Negative fact)
(iii) The tortoise beat the hare in a race. (Affirmative action)
(iv) The tortoise did not miss the race. (Negative action)
(v) Dengue has broken out in the city. (Affirmative happening)
(vi) There was no rainfall at night. (Negative happening)
