Uses of Interrogative Pronouns

             Who, whom, whose and what are used for people.

          Read the sentences given below.

               l   What do you want for dinner?

            What and which are used for things.

          Read the sentences given below.
               l   Which is your favourite colour: red or yellow?

               l   What is in your bag?


          Possessive Pronouns

          The pronouns that show ownership of something or someone are called the possessive pronouns.
          They are often used in place of noun phrases.
          Read the sentences given below.

               l   Susan is a friend of mine.                  l   Are those gloves hers?


          Relative Pronouns

          The pronouns that refer to nouns mentioned earlier in sentences are called the relative pronouns.
          They are used to join phrases or clauses to other sentences. A relative pronoun is placed near a
          noun or a pronoun it refers to. Who, whom, whose, which and that are relative pronouns.

          Uses of Relative Pronouns

             Whom and who are only used for people.
          Read the sentences given below.

               l   She wrote to the person whom she had met last month.

                  Here, the relative pronoun whom is used as an object.
               l   People who are clever can always find a way.

                  Here, the relative pronoun who is used as a subject.

            Whose is used for people and things.

          Read the sentences given below.

               l   I have a friend, whose cat is annoying.
               l   The baby, whose nap had been interrupted, wailed loudly.

            Which is used for things and animals.
