A monkey and a crocodile were good friends. They loved each other’s company.
The monkey lived on a mango tree on the bank of a river. The crocodile used to
take the monkey on his back for a ride around the river.
One day, the crocodile’s wife became seriously ill and was almost dying. An evil
friend told her that her life could be saved if she was fed a monkey’s heart. Learning
this, the wife told her husband to bring his friend to her so that she could eat his
heart and get well.
The crocodile invited the monkey for dinner. The monkey happily accepted the
offer. He rode on the crocodile’s back, and they merrily went off for dinner.
But, on the way, the crocodile could not resist himself from telling the truth to the
monkey. He told the monkey that his wife wants to eat his heart. The monkey was scared
to learn about the danger to his life and was sad to see the deceit of a good friend. The
monkey, in order to save himself, thought of a plan. He said to the crocodile, “Oh! you
should have told me this before. Yesterday, I kept my heart somewhere on the mango
tree. I have forgotten to bring it.” The crocodile, along with the monkey, returned to the
mango tree to take the monkey’s heart. Reaching the mango tree, the clever monkey
climbed up the tree and broke off his friendship with the crocodile. He had understood
the difference between a good friend and an evil friend.
