Let us add 16 and 18.
Tens Ones
Step 1: Add the ones first. 1

6 ones + 8 ones = 14 ones = 1 ten + 4 ones 1 6
+ 1 8
Step 2: Write 4 in the ones column and take 3 1 4

1 ten to the tens column as carry.

Step 3: Add the tens.

1 ten + 1 ten + 1 ten (carried over) = 3 tens

Step 4: Write 3 in the tens column.
