Example 1: From a roll of electric cable 80 m long, a piece of length 37 m 5 cm
is used. How much cable is left in the roll?

Solution: Total length of cable = 80 m m cm

Remaining length = 80 m – 37 m 5 cm – 3 7 0 5

Example 2: Tuheena bought three pieces of ribbon of red, yellow and white colour
measuring 2 m 35 cm, 3 m 15 cm and 7 m 80 cm respectively. What length

of ribbon did she purchase altogether?

Solution: Length of red ribbon = 2 m 35 cm

Length of yellow ribbon = 3 m 15 cm

Length of white ribbon = + 7 m 80 cm

Total Length = 13 m 30 cm

Hence, the total length of ribbon is 13 m 30 cm.

Example 3: Goldy’s offi ce is 15 km away from her home. She covers 10 km 325 m of

this distance by metro and the rest by auto-rickshaw. How much distance
does she cover by auto-rickshaw?

Solution: Total distance to be covered = 15 km 000 m

Distance covered by metro = – 10 km 325 m

Distance covered by auto-rickshaw = 4 km 675 m

Hence, the distance covered by auto-rickshaw is 4 km 675 m.
