We know that natural numbers along with zero make up whole numbers. So, we get
because whole numbers contain natural numbers and zero (Fig. (b)).
Now, we have negative numbers and integers. Let us represent these with the figure Fig. (b)
given below (Fig. (c)).
Negative numbers Integers
Fig. (c)
Thus, we can draw the figure as shown in (Fig. (d)) because integers
contain whole numbers as well as negative numbers.
The natural numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, .... are called positive integers and the
numbers –1, –2, –3, .... are called negative integers. Fig. (d)
● The numbers ..., – 4, –3, –2, –1 are called negative integers.
● The numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, ... are called positive integers.
● The number zero is an integer but it is neither positive nor negative.

Entry to the ‘FUN TOWN’ is at the ground floor level and is called the ‘Welcome Ice cream
Hall’. Starting from the ground floor, you can reach the Cinema by pressing FUN TOWN Cinema
+ 1 and can reach the Ice cream by pressing + 2. So, we can say that the Welcome hall
Cinema is on Floor + 1 and that the Ice cream parlour is on Floor + 2. Food court
Starting from the ground floor, You reach the food court by pressing - 1 and Art Center
can reach the Art Center by pressing - 2. So we can say that the food court is Toys
on -1 and that the Art center is on floor - 2. Video Games
