Measurement 121
To convert from higher units to lower units, we multiply by 10 or 100 or 1000.
milli centi deci metre/gram litre deca hecto kilo
× 10 × 10 × 10 × 10 × 10 × 10
1 m = 10 dm 1 m = 100 cm 1 m = 1000 mm
1 1 1
1 m = dam 1 m = hm 1 m = km
10 100 1000
Similarly, we can follow the conversions for gram and litre too.
1 kg = 1000 g 1 hg = 100 g 1 dag = 10 g
1 1 1
1 dg = g = 0.1 g 1 cg = g = 0.01 g 1 mg = g = 0.001 g
10 100 1000
1 kL = 1000 L 1 hL = 100 L 1 daL = 10 L
1 1 1
1 dL = L = 0.1 L 1 cL = L = 0.01 L 1 mL = L = 0.001 L
10 100 1000
Fact-o-meter Challenge
Conversion from higher to lower units, we multiply. “I measure liquids or sometimes space,
Conversion from lower to higher units, we divide. In a container, I find my place.
Whether it’s water, milk, or oil,
I help to measure without any toil.
Let us learn through examples. What am I?
Let’s Attempt
Example 1: Convert the following as directed.
(a) 2 dm to mm (b) 5000 dag to kg
Solution: (a) 1 dm = 100 mm (b) 1 dag = 1 kg
2 dm = 2 × 100 = 200 mm 100
5000 dag = 5000 kg = 50 kg.
100
Example 2: Do the following conversions.
(a) 55 cm into m (b) 25 mg into g
(c) 4.15 m into mm (d) 60 mL into L
