Example 2: Find the factors of 36 by division.
Solution: Number Divisor Quotient Fact-o-meter
36 ÷ 1 = 36 When factors are
36 ÷ 2 = 18 repeated, no further
36 ÷ 3 = 12 division takes place.
36 ÷ 4 = 9
36 ÷ 5 = cannot divide 36 completely
36 ÷ 6 = 6
36 ÷ 7 = cannot divide 36 completely
36 ÷ 8 = cannot divide 36 completely
36 ÷ 9 = 4
All the divisors and quotients are the factors of 36.
Thus, the factors of 36 are 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 9, 12, 18 and 36.
Example 3: Find the factors of 24 by multiplication.
Solution: To find the factors of 24, we write it as
24 = 1 × 24 or 24 × 1 Fact-o-meter
24 = 2 × 12 or 12 × 2  A factor of a number is an exact
divisor of that number.
24 = 3 × 8 or 8 × 3  Factor is always smaller than or
equal to the given number.
24 = 4 × 6 or 6 × 4
24 = 5 × ?
Now, there are no other numbers which give 24 as product.
Thus, the factors of 24 are: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12 and 24. 7
Example 4: Is 8 a factor of 60? 8 6 0
Solution: We divide 60 by 8 and find that 4 is left as remainder. –5 6
4
Thus, 8 is not a factor of 60.
Properties of Factors
1 is a factor of every number and also is the smallest factor of that number.
For example, 1 is the smallest factor of 13. Challenge
Every number is the largest factor of itself. I m a number game, oh so neat finding
For example, 24 is the largest factor of 24. me is really quite a feat,
Every factor of a number is either less than or I am a number between 20 and 30
equal to the given number. I am a multiple of 3, 4 and 6, what
For example, all the factors of 24 are 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, number am I?
12 and 24. These all are either less than or equal to 24.
