Boot-Up
Vikas and his friends went to watch a cricket match in which Vikas’s brother Sanjay was playing.
Altogether, Sanjay has scored (48 + 48 + 48 + 48 + 48 = _________) runs.
This is the same as 48 × 5 = 240 runs as multiplication means repeated addition.
H T O
4 8
× 5
2 4 0
Verification
48 × 5 = 240
or we can say that
4 8
5 2 4 0
– 2 0
4 0
– 4 0
×
i.e. 240 ÷ 5 = 48
‘‘Multiplication is a process of repeated addition of a number itself and multiplication is quicker than
repeated addition.’’
‘‘Division is an inverse process of multiplication.’’
We have already learnt to multiply 3-digit and 4-digit numbers by 1 and 2-digit numbers
respectively in previous class. Let us learn further.
