Tally Marks Fact-o-meter
While representing a given data mainly the large data, In tally marks, we represent 1 by ,
we might do errors in counting. To avoid it and to 2 by , 3 by , 4 by , 5 by ,
consolidate a large data easily, we use tally marks. 6 by and so on.
How to use this, we learn through the given examples.
Let’s Attempt
Example: The following data shows the flavour of ice-cream sold in an ice-cream parlour.
Strawberry, chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, strawberry, vanilla, chocolate, mango,
mango, vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, chocolate, chocolate, vanilla, mango,
orange, orange, orange, chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, chocolate, orange, vanilla,
mango, strawberry, chocolate, chocolate, chocolate
Prepare a tally chart for the given data and then answer the following questions:
(a) Which ice-cream was sold in maximum number?
(b) Which two flavours of ice-creams were sold minimum and equally?
Solution: The tally chart is as follows:
Ice-cream flavour Tally Marks Number of ice-cream
Strawberry 6
Chocolate 10
Mango 4
Orange 4
Vanilla 6
Total 30
(a) Chocolate ice-cream was sold in maximum number.
(b) Mango and orange flavoured ice-creams were sold minimum and equally.
Pictograph
Pictographs are the pictorial representation of given data. We use a symbol to represent the
information where a symbol can be equal to 1 or more units.
