Calendar
A calendar shows the days, weeks and months in a year.
There are 12 months in a year. January, March, May, July, August, October and December have
31 days each. Rest of the months have 30 days each except February. February has 28 days in
an ordinary year but has 29 days in a leap year.
Writing Dates
Dates can be written in different formats:
For example, 1 January, 2015 or January 1, 2015 or 01/01/2015 or 1.1.2015
Time Duration in Days
Let us now learn to calculate the number of days between two dates in a calendar.
Let’s Attempt

Example 1: How many days are there from 21 March to 17 April?
Solution: Days left in March = 31 (Number of days in March) – 20 (21 is not counted) = 11
Days in April = 17 1 1
Total number of days = 11 + 17 = 28 days + 1 7

Thus, there are 28 days from 21 March to 17 April. 2 8

Example 2: Find the number of days from 18 January 2012 to 9 March 2012.
Solution: Since, 2012 is divisible by 4, it is a leap year. 2
1 4
Thus, February has 29 days.
2 9
Days in January = 31–17 (18 is not counted) = 14 days + 9
Days in February = 29 days 5 2
Days in March = 9 days
Total number of days = 14 + 29 + 9 = 52 days

Thus, there are 52 days from 18 January 2012 to 9 March 2012.
Example 3: My school was closed for summer vacation from May 10, 2019 to July 9, 2019.
How long did the vacation last?
Solution: Days in May = 31 – 9 (10 is not counted) = 22 2
Days in June = 30 2 2
Days in July = 9 + 3 0
9
Total number of days = 22 + 30 + 9 = 61 days 6 1
Thus, the summer vacation lasted for 61 days.
