Subtraction with Regrouping
2-digit number from a 3-digit number
Let us subtract 75 from 392.
Step 1: Write the numbers in columns.
Step 2: Check the ones digit. Here, 2 < 5. Since 5 cannot H T O
be subtracted from 2, borrow 1 ten from 9 tens. 8 12
10 ones + 2 ones = 12 ones (1 ten = 10 ones) 3 9 2
After borrowing, change the tens digit from – 7 5
9 to 8. 7
Now subtract the ones. 12 – 5 = 7 ones
Write 7 in ones column. H T O
8 12
Step 3: Subtract the tens. 3 9 2
8 – 7 = 1 ten – 7 5
H T O 1 7
8 12
Step 4: Subtract the hundreds. 3 9 2
3 – 0 = 3 hundreds – 0 7 5
Thus, 392 – 75 = 317 3 1 7
3-digit number from a 3-digit number
Let us subtract 368 from 654.
Step 1: Check the ones digits. 4 < 8, borrow 1 ten from 5 tens.
10 ones + 4 ones = 14 ones (1 ten = 10 ones)
After borrowing, change the tens digit from H T O
14
4
5 to 4. 6 5 4
Now, subtract the ones digits. i.e. 14 – 8 = 6 ones – 3 6 8
Write 6 in ones column. 6
