Children! You are living in the 21st century which is also known as the age of Information technologies. In the
1940s, it has been demonstrated that computers can be programmed to carry out very complex tasks like playing
chess with great proficiency. Till now, some programs have attained the performance levels of human experts
and professionals in performing certain specific tasks. These programs make the machines intelligent.
As you know, computer is a smart machine in terms of solving complex calculations within a second but it is
not able to perform all the tasks which are being performed by an individual. For example: Understanding any
regional or local language, cannot move here and there, identifying objects, cannot sense whether the provided
input is wrong or right. But computers need expert skills to carry out some special tasks which are very difficult
for human beings such as checkup of heart, medical diagnosis of illness, etc.

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI)

The term artificial intelligence is composed of two words, i.e. Artificial and Intelligence. The word ‘artificial’
means non-natural, i.e, anything that is man-made and Intelligence refers to the ability to understand, think and
learn. So, combining both, Al can be defined as an artificial man-made thinking power of a machine. In simple
terms, AI is an approach to make a computer, a robot, or a product to think how smart humans think.
