PREPARING A MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE
Maintenance of a computer is not a task to be undertaken only once. A computer requires regular care and
maintenance to keep working at its full efficiency. Thus, it is important to schedule maintenance tasks at regular
time-periods.
Some maintenance tasks that should be performed regularly are:
u Cleaning of all peripheral devices such as keyboard, mouse, printer and monitor.
u Replacing all broken devices.
u Replacing all faulty and broken connectors and wires.
u Cleaning and opening all vents on the computer and peripheral devices.
u Cleaning the work area where the computer and other devices are placed.
u Unistalling unwanted and obsolete programs from the computer.
u Taking regular backups of data stored in the computer onto an external device such as DVD, pen drive or
external hard disk.
u Checking that previous backups are in working conditions.
u Running regular scans for malware and viruses using an antivirus software.
u Regularly updating the antivirus virus definitions.
u Installing updates for operating system and other software as and when they are made available.
u Periodically revising the firewall settings
to ensure unauthorised access to the
computer.
u Clearing of unwanted, duplicate or
obsolete files from the computer.
u Clearing the browser history and cookies
from the computer.
u Running disk defragmenter utility to keep
the hard disk at optimal performance
level.
u Upgrading the hardware of the computer
when it becomes necessary.
The maintenance schedule should be prepared
with dates and timings and displayed at a place
where it is clearly visible. The Task Scheduler utility available in the Windows Administrative Tools in Windows 10
should be used to schedule various software maintenance tasks.
